Health Benefits to Swimming
There are many health benefits to swimming. We’ve listed the main one’s below!
Gives you a whole body workout
One of the main benefits to swimming is that it gives your whole body a workout. It works each muscle group as you swim, while also increasing your heart rate. The movement through water provides a gentle resistance for these muscle groups and provides a cardiovascular workout at the same time.
Swimming is a fantastic way to burn a lot of calories in a short time. Depending on the intensity and your fitness level you could burn between 400 to 1000 calories per hour swimming.
Walking at a moderate pace for an hour burns around 160 calories, while cycling burns about 600 per hour. It is also an extremely low impact activity, so you can push the intensity without putting extra pressure on your joints, allowing you to increase the intensity and time spent in the water.
Improves sleep quality
Swimming, like other forms of aerobic exercise, can help to improve your sleep quality. When we exercise we produce endorphins, reducing stress and making us feel happier. When we are happier and less stressed we sleep better.
Here at our Leisure Center in Roganstown Hotel and Country Club we offer several swim classes to help you get in shape. Our swim instructor Phil takes children’s classes on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 2pm until 6pm and adult classes from 7pm.
