John Daly – winner of the 1991 US PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open Championship stayed at Roganstown while competing in the Irish Open at Baltrae from 11th through 17th May. While here he met some of our members demonstrating his skills off the tee and also answering questions. Some of our members who fancy themselves as big hitters took John on in a long drive competition but none of them could get close to the Long Ball Rebel from Arkansas.
John’s easygoing personality was a great hit and the audience hung on to his every word and at times were reduced to tears of laughter by some of his tongue in cheek answers to their questions. On 16th May John and his caddy Kerry Lott (also a US PGA professional) played 18 holes at Roganstown with Ian and Colm McGuinness. The conditions were extremely difficult with gale force winds – yet John managed a superb 4under par 67 playing from the professional tees.
Renowned for the distance he hits the ball from the tee (John hit a 375 yard drive on the par 5 18th leaving himself a 5 iron shot to the green which he put to 10 feet from the flag) – he is also one of the best short game exponents on tour and delighted Ian and Colm whith his easy company breathtaking shotmaking and miraculous short game.
