Roganstown announced as Sustainable Energy Awards Finalist 2008

The annual Sustainable Energy Awards are intended to encourage, recognise and reward excellence in energy management in the industrial, commercial and public sectors. The awards will focus on individuals, groups and organisations who demonstrate a commitment to include energy management as part of their overall management structure and provide an opportunity for organisations, regardless of size, to gain public recognition for their achievements in reducing energy use and emissions. This is the fifth year of this national initiative which is the only awards scheme recognising best practice in energy performance, management and design.

Roganstown has been judged a finalist in the Renewable Energy Project category for its Wood Chip Boiler Project.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Dublin on Thursday 20th November ‘08.

The wood chip boiler at Roganstown Golf and County Club was switched on in March 2007, as the hotel became the first in North County Dublin to install this renewable ‘green’ technology. Compared with the existing conventional fuel system, the woodchip boiler will save more than 550 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.

CO2 Savings

Clearpower estimate that Roganstown will use approx 600 tonnes of woodchip per annum = 2.4M KWh of woodchip fuel
This will displace 2.4M KWh of LPG fuel
LPG emits 229.28 grams/CO2 per KWh burnt (details for each fuel on SEI website) Therefore there will be a saving of 551 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.
If the Irish Government is fined 20 euro per tonne that we are over (Kyoto obligations) this equates to an 11K saving to the exchequer per annum.

The two charities have benefited considerably since its inception with this year’s event raising an impressive €70,000, bringing the total amount raised over the past three years to €250,000.

Guests also enjoyed a Gala dinner where a special charity auction was the main focus of everyone’s attention. Auction Lots included a driver signed by Darren Clarke, a golfing day with Paul McGinley and two tickets to the 2009 FA Cup Final.
